New entrepreneurial ideas won gold and bronze medals, the outstanding performance of Chung Cheng University students recognized and praised in the international competition in Korea

The youth entrepreneurial trend is constantly evolving, and good ideas from the younger generation to kick-start a business just keep springing up. The students of the National Chung Cheng University (CCU) are no exception. In April, two teams made up by 6 CCU students each, both represented Taiwan in the Korean 2019 KT &G Asian Students’ Venture Forum (ASVF), competing with other students of other Asian countries. Team One with the idea, "Green Carrier, the eco-friendly cups automatic leasing system" based on the concept of environmental protection, was awarded with Golden Prize. And Team Two with the idea, “Future Mate, the social network platform specifically for elderly community” to help retirees regain their enthusiasm in life, won the Bronze medal in the entrepreneurial idea competition. Both stood out of 18 teams from 10 Asian countries and eventually won the prizes, due to the high degree of product planning and APP prototype completion that have revealed in their presentations.

"The name ‘Green Carrier’, indicates the link between the color of green and the environmental issues, also conveys that everyone can be the message carrier for environmental protection", said the team leader of Green Carrier, Huang黃紹閔. On CCU campus, the team members noticed the rubbish bins often filled with used paper cups and dumped lunch boxes of different sizes and shapes which cannot be stacked neatly. Those disposable cups and containers not only overused a lot of resources but also made the collecting sites looked messy and untidy. So, encouraging people to prepare their own tableware for dinning purposes seems to be the solution against the problem mentioned above. Unfortunately, in reality it is unlikely to expect everyone to carry a set of eco-friendly tableware whenever needed. Therefore, CCU Team One came up with the idea of "eco-friendly cups automatic leasing system", with the supply of unified and reusable cups, the team practically designed the rental APP and the model machine for cup recycling as the first step, in the hope to have more consumers willing to help protect our environment.

Huang explained that simply after the APP has been installed, the automatic leasing system will allow people to instantly search for cooperative stores nearby. When people want to purchase drinks from those stores, all they have to do is to scan the bar code of the eco-friendly cups provided by the stores to complete the registration and lease-out process before they leave the premises with the drinks and the cups. If the consumers' leasing-returning rate are good, “green bonus” will be awarded for the consumers to exchange for some price discount in the future.

"We even plan to save the trouble of cleaning the cups for consumers before returning the cups to the stores." Huang further explained that the team also came up with another idea of designing a "cup returning machine". The ideal set-ups for the recycle processes are that the consumers take the specific cups to the machine, scan the bar code of the cups, throw the cups in the machine, then they shall immediately receive notifications to confirm the return. The returning machine itself will have a water tank with some liquid in it, when people return those items, the cup bodies and cup lids will be soaked for a while before taken to the station for cleaning and sterilization, after that, the items will be sent back to the store when ready. At present, the APP with the rental function of the "eco-friendly cup automatic leasing system" has been developed successfully, and the plans to cooperate with the stores on CCU campus to test the consumers’ response are also on its way. The team expects to continue working on the APP until it can be put to use practically, the cash flow connection for the system and the real product of the cup returning machine, to finally realize its entrepreneurial dream.

As to another award-winning team from CCU, the Team Two aimed at the elderly and middle-aged people who might feel suddenly losing focus in life after they have retired from their jobs, and launched the work “Future Mate, the social network platform specifically for elderly community” in the competition. Compared with the ideas from other counterpart teams which all focus on health care issues, "being sociable, or just have someone to dine with, can have even greater joyful effects on people psychologically, we hope to help connect these newly retired elderly and middle-aged people through the platform", said the team member Lin林冠儀.

So far, this team has planned to promote congregate dining, traveling with companions and talents or skills exchange, as the main axis of the social platform. Through the downloaded APP, people can search for nearby activities or courses and register to join all at once, if they are interested. They can even open their own classes with or without charging people on the platform. Lin stated that this system not only allows the middle-aged and elderly retirees to have a source of income and sustainably help keep on developing the platform by sharing experiences or exchanging talents and skills, more importantly, it can also enrich those retirees with better social life and eventually enhance their sense of accomplishment. In the future, if the APP of this social platform has been thoroughly developed, more functions such as mutual care, health examination, group purchasing service, etc., would be added on to it, bringing E-lifestyle closer to the elderly and middle-aged people, for them to expand their social circle with diversified and diverting activities.

2019 KT &G Asian Students’ Venture Forum (ASVF) is one of the biggest student innovation and entrepreneurship concepts sharing forums, held by Korea Economic Daily and sponsored by KT&G. In the forum, students from Asian countries are encouraged to share the creative business ideas, exchange and discuss social, cultural and economic issues. The two teams formed by CCU students attracted the judges’ attention by their clear and logical expressions, surpassing other strong teams from China, Korea and Singapore. At the end of the competition, these two CCU teams were awarded with the gold and bronze prizes respectively.
