2019 English and American Literature Association Annual Conference at CCU

2019 English and American Literature Association Annual Conference at CCU
2nd November 2019, College of Humanities, National Chung Cheng University

Here we are 50 years on from the end of the restless era of the 1960s. Yet the restlessness of that period still permeates our society, as it too was permeated by the restlessness of earlier periods – the 1920s Lost Generation, the Bloomsbury Group, the Dadaists, the Surrealists, the Symbolist poets all the way back to the Renaissance masters and before.
“Restlessness” can refer to a state of agitation in times of upheaval. It is a sensibility that rises up in opposition to the status quo, allowing individuals to deviate from the norms to fight vociferously against mainstream values. Restlessness may indicate paranoia, a manifestation of fanaticism, or dissatisfaction with contemporary society, and may incite change in turbulent situations. It can also provide a fertile ground for engaging discourses on literature, psychology, and ethics amongst contending schools of thought.
There are numerous examples of restlessness in English literature where forms of restlessness can disrupt and challenge social-political contexts. Likewise, mainstream social and cultural thinking is also contested by the representation of restlessness in American literature. The socio-political interrogation and formal experimentation of literary texts are all features of restlessness which are indicative of our multicultural, interdisciplinary, and transnational society.

The 2019 EALA conference “Restlessness” at CCU presents an internationally renowned body of scholars who will speak on a wide range of topics and authors related to the topic of “Restlessness”. Keynote speaker, poet and highly experienced and prolific American studies scholar Dr A. Robert Lee will introduce proceedings with a talk on that classic of restless literature, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.
